Back 40 FireSmart Project

FireSmart-e1508451100209

FireSmart fuel reduction work has commenced on the Back 40 Recreation Lease to reduce the threat of wildfire to life and property in the area.

No one is allowed on-site where falling equipment, chain-saws, or mulching equipment is operating as per OH&S Legislation.

The project commenced November 21, 2017 and will be completed by January 15, 2018.

The project includes FireSmart recommended standards including:

  • Unit 1: 30 m wide fireguard will be established generating a large amount of green firewood
  • Unit 1b: Downfall and standing dead will be mulched and remaining trees branches pruned up to 2 m.
  • Unit 2: Mulching of understory and deadfall, trimming conifer branches up to 2 m. Standing dead trees will be cut and bucked for firewood if they are close to open trails.  Cutline trail will be widened to 8 m for rapid fire vehicle access.

Refer to the Back 40 FireSmart Nov Flyer which provides more details on the work being completed with access restrictions information, project contacts and a map.

Debris will be mulched onsite.  Firewood will be piled at the edge of trails for residents to remove by obtaining TFA and TM66 permits.

REMEMBER **Please stack firewood as far away from your house as possible to reduce the fuel load next to your house**

After this FireSmart work is completed and the report has been finalised a public information session will be held on Saturday February 24 at the Waiparous Community Services Building. This event will be organised by the Back 40 and SVW FireSmart Committees.
