Things to Do

Recreational opportunities abound in the M.D. of Bighorn, from dogsledding, skiing, skating in the winter to hiking, horseback riding, cycling and climbing in the summer. There are many experienced commercial operations just waiting to provide you with a quality outdoor experience. Alternatively, our outdoor backyard is just waiting for you to explore on your own.

Hiking

The M.D. of Bighorn, particularly in the Bow Valley, is the staging area for numerous hiking adventures. We boast the first newly constructed portion of the Trans Canada Trail between our communities of Lac des Arcs and Dead Man's Flats.

The Heart Creek Trail, Grotto Canyon and Jura Creek are all popular destinations.

Ghost River Forest Reserve In the Ranchlands portion of the M.D. of Bighorn, the Ghost River Forest Reserve is a Mecca for outdoor recreation. Here, there are miles of hiking, cycling and equestrian trails. Take a day or week to explore this marvelous wilderness area.

Each of our residential hamlets has a series of informal trails for local residents to stroll and meet your neighbours.

Boating/Rafting

Ghost Reservoir Sailing in Alberta - why not? Just drop-by the Ghost Reservoir and put your boat in the water to enjoy an afternoon on this popular water area.

Rafting and canoeing on the Bow River, which flows through Bighorn, are very popular ways to spend a day. Local outfitters can provide you with all the gear and guidance necessary.

Fishing

The world-renowned Bow River flows through the M.D. of Bighorn in the Bow Valley. For fly fishermen, there isn't a finer fishing experience anywhere.

Grotto and Gap pondGrotto and Gap pond are popular spots to bring the family, drop a line or climb in a belly boat and then enjoy a picnic on the scenic shores.

Take your power boat and head out on the Ghost Reservoir for a great day of fishing and boating.

Other Outdoor Activities:

Dogsledding is a very popular activity in this area and a number of outfits can provide you with this experience.

GolfGolf has come to Bighorn. Presently, there is a nine hole course at the intersection of Highways 1A and 1X; this course is planning expansion to a full eighteen holes within the next few years.

Rock Climbing goes hand-in-hand with the Rocky Mountains. Whether you're looking to do some scrambling, sport climb and to do some serious vertical, we have the rock.

Still looking for more adventure? How about a day of paint ball, capture the flag or spelunking(that's climbing through caves).

Each of our residential communities has a variety of recreational opportunities: playgrounds, ball diamonds, tennis courts, playing fields and outdoor skating rinks, just to mention a few.
