Because the M.D. continues to sporadically release wastewater from the Exshaw lagoon into the Bow River, we are continuing to recommend private well users follow the cautionary procedures of a water boil advisory or to undertake a microbiological test of your water well before consumption. Bacteriological water testing bottles are available from Alberta Health Services located in the Provincial Building at #104 800 Railway Avenue in Canmore between the hours of 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Water samples are accepted Mondays and Wednesdays before 2pm. To speak to a Public Health Inspector regarding your well, call Alberta Health Services at 1-855-943-2288 or 1-403-493-8052.

Please be advised that due to rising groundwater levels, the wastewater collection systems at our east lift station, and at our wastewater lagoon, are experiencing extreme volumes and cannot keep up to all the flow.

To prevent wastewater from backing up into resident’s basements in lower Exshaw, we have contacted Alberta Environment and Parks and have approval to pump wastewater from the lift station into the culvert under Highway 1A, and ultimately to the Bow River. We are also discharging from the wastewater lagoon to the Bow River.

Although the wastewater that we are pumping is diluted with large volumes of groundwater, we are recommending that residents on a private well boil their water prior to consumption. Please go to: for information on boil water advisories.

As per Alberta Environment and Parks, the wastewater release will be tested throughout this event.

Residents who are connected to the Municipal water system are not affected by this boil water advisory.

If you have any questions or concerns, please no not hesitate to contact me immediately at 403-673-3611 Ext.242.

Yours truly,
