Accepting Applications for Boards, Committees & Commissions

The Municipal Government Act requires all Councils in Alberta to hold an organizational meeting every year. During the organizational meeting Council undertakes a number of administrative housekeeping matters and appointments to various Boards/Commissions/Committees. The MD of Bighorn’s organizational meeting is held in October.

Members of the public are invited to submit an application to the MD no later than October 5, 2020, if they are interested in participating on a Board/Commission/Committee.

Most of the Boards/Commissions/Committees are advisory bodies, providing advice and recommendations to Council, although some are autonomous and make decisions on their own (such as the Assessment Review Board, Municipal Planning Commission, and the Subdivision/Development Appeal Board). Time commitments vary with some Boards/Commissions/Committees meeting regularly on a monthly basis, while some meet only when necessary (at the call of the Chair), or when an issue arises that requires their review. 

Some of the Boards/Commissions/Committees have specific and sometimes mandatory training requirements, that are provided by Provincial staff or other personnel. Attendees are provided per-diems and, if incurred, coverage of expenses (mileage, meals, accommodations). 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all meetings are being held on-line. Members of the public applying for a Board/Commission/Committee position will need reliable internet and a computer with video and microphone capabilities. This ensures that the MD provides a safe and efficient way to comply with the current Alberta Health Services directives while still carrying on regular business functions.
